SPORTS INJURIES

Sports Injuries

When sports injuries occur, the body responds with a protective reaction called inflammation. Inflammation is the release of our body chemicals that fight infection. If you have a cut, the inflammation blocks the infection from spreading into your body. We see inflammation when a part of the body becomes swollen after an injury. We also see inflammation in our joints when injured and is represented on x-ray or MRI findings as fluid in the joint.

But, if inflammation continues long after an injury, the chemicals that block infection can also cause damage to our own body. The chemicals of inflammation kill bacteria, but (long term) also damage our body parts. These chemicals can cause chronic and persistent tendonitis, ligament pain and joint degeneration. Examples of chronic inflammation include: tennis elbow, golfers elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis and shoulder pain, Achilles tendonitis, neck pain, back pain, hip pain, knee pain and many more sports related injuries.

The inflammatory process then must be stopped if it continues after the infection resolves, or if there was no infection caused by the injury. Therefore, to avoid further damage to the injured area medical intervention is needed to stop the inflammation and allow the injury to heal or to allow the initiation of further medical regenerative treatments.

Sports injuries need to be quickly evaluated and treated. Injured structures need to be repaired, either with medical assistance or by harnessing the body’s healing properties. An injury should not be ignored with the hope that it will get better with rest. At the Institute we recommend that you see a qualified physician who will determine if treatment needs to be started.

Just as our work places and automobiles are more ergonomic, new studies and research have modernized and changed our approach to injuries. Research in the healing of injuries has produced new treatments using stem cells and Platelet Rich Plasma. Many professional athletes have had these new innovative treatments and have returned more rapidly back to their sport.

At our Pain Clinic in West Palm Beach we specialize in the treatment of newly acquired and chronic issues related to sports injuries.

To not be able to move or get out of bed for about 3 years... it took everything I love. The staff at Palm Beach Spine & Diagnostic Institute gave me a lot of hope. It took a few weeks and I started to feel better. It was miraculous. I danced... hiked ... doing kung-fu again ... it's definitely worth it. You can't put a price on feeling good. You cannot put a price on your health.
